How did you come up with the name of your studio?
The Quirk design philosophy is based on creating inspirational spaces that are minimal as well as out of the box — a concept that is reflected in our logo too. Our inclination towards drifting away from conventional ideas of luxury and bringing forth a new meaning to luxury makes ‘Quirk Studio’ fitted in perfectly with the brand vision as it truly defines our style and design ideology.
What was the vision you started with when you set up Quirk Studio?
The vision for Quirk Studio was to establish a boutique design studio that aims to depart from the conventional notion of luxury to cater to modern, novel notions of comfort and self-expression.
Describe your duo in three words?
Experimental, Bold, Passionate
Which would you say has been a hallmark project undertaken by the Quirk Studio?
It is needless to say that every project is designed with absolute passion and panache at Quirk Studio. Nevertheless, ‘House No.12’ and ‘Office with a view’ are two significant projects that played a vital role in our design journey and are symbolic of our design approach while catering to unique design briefs.
How and what led to Quirk Studio? How did you decide to team up?
During the period we worked together at a publication house, we realised that we have a similar passion for design and its manifestation in daily life. Of course, similar aesthetic sensibilities and a larger passion to make an impact in the built environment through design encouraged us to take the initiative to start our boutique design firm — Quirk Studio.
What defines your style?
Although our design is always evolving, our style is contemporary, modern and minimal. We believe in crafting spaces that reflect our design philosophy using a diverse range of textures, colours, and eclectic elements.
As this year marks your 7th anniversary, how does it feel to come this far as a team?
Our journey has been progressive, accompanied by many challenges, but has been exceedingly satisfying. Our passion and perseverance, together with the support and encouragement from our clients has helped us build Quirk Studio, brick-by-brick. However, we are constantly yearning for more opportunities within the industry and continue with our desire to make good design more accessible. Most importantly, having the full support of our entire team, the clients of course, including contractors and vendors, has been one of our biggest strengths.
What is your philosophy on design and life?
Our design philosophy is finding simplicity in clutter and creating in order to inspire. We are committed to designing aesthetic as well as functional spaces that offer a balanced design experience to our clients. We genuinely believe in creating spaces that have the power to transport you into another world, while evoking an emotional response and crafting a unique design experience.
Where do you see Quirk Studio when it turns 15 years old?
Our experience until now has been quite exhilarating. That said, we look forward to creating better and more significant projects without compromising on quality. We want to always have the liberty to experiment and get acknowledged for pushing boundaries in design while using design as a tool to create a better-built environment and enabling a better quality of life.
What are your design dreams/goals?
As designers, it is our dream to grow and expand, while remaining a boutique design firm in the industry. Since we love experimenting with materials, textures and colours, one of our goals is to infuse Indian local products into our modern and contemporary spaces to add a touch of Indian modernism to our projects.
A quote that sums up your seven-year journey?
In the words of Robert Frost
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
Now that you run such an established practice, what do you do to not fall into a comfort zone?
As designers, we are constantly evolving. Personally, we are always striving to achieve perfection as we are big critiques of our own work. Considering that both of us are highly driven and motivated individuals, we do not have room for complacency. Additionally, our young and energetic team is equally passionate about our vision and is continually brainstorming to keep us striving for more.
Words of wisdom for the young aspirants.
It is imperative that one must believe in themselves. We want to encourage young aspirants to take the plunge to achieve their goals without asking too many questions. To sum up, keep your blinkers on and continue working towards your dream.
