Firm/Studio Name
Architects at Work

How did you come up with the name of your studio?
Well…
When we work on any project is like you are giving in whole n soul to make it best, n it suggests like we are men at work for some particular motto and that’s how it naturally evolved in mind that we should name ourselves Architects at Work.
Basically, it says that we are in serious business.

What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.
Architecture never came easily on paper.
It always required that determination and thought process to go through and that weaved in our nature as an architect and metamorphose into our passion to always cater with adept creativity. So, we never decided, it was the way to go about it I guess.

What kind of projects were you doing when you first started as a designer?
Around us, spaces that need our inputs are first our habitats as that’s our way of life that reflects us, and that’s why people around us always need designers to fulfil that.
So when we started there were people around us who wanted their houses and offices to be designed by us.

What field of design are you most interested in?
We actually see residences and other institutes are giving us the most challenges to deal with their minute requirements, which again give us whole new thinking to resolve it.
Thus schools, bungalows, offices, work stations, corporate houses which basically occupied by humans with their particular needs.

What is your favourite book/magazine on design? How about your favourite site?
‘PATHS UNCHARTED by B.V.Doshi is one of our favourite books.
Arch daily, Design-boom, Buildofy etc are some of our favourite websites.

What is your Signature Style?
We designers always evolve our self as a creator nevertheless you would continuously see playing with materials and their limitation when it comes to our signature style.

What inspires you to thrive in this industry? Which piece of architecture inspires you the most.
B.V.Doshi, Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn and Zaha Hadid who personified architecture to another level are inspiring figures to us.
The architecture marvels by them are inspiring to thrive beyond like Hussain Doshi gufa at Ahmedabad, IIM building at Ahmedabad, Notre Dam chapel at Ronchamp, Vitra Fire station and so on.

From your point of view, is design an art or a science?
Any art form requires science to work behind it. As you know how colours were found in Prism or other modern art are based on the technicality of materials.
To stretch a material beyond its limitations we need science to work our way.

If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?
Money or resources are insignificant that limit your creativity as a designer, even we have limited sources we shape the circumstances in the client’s favour to pay off what we are appointed for.
So I would always create something that fascinates me and the client.

What advice do you have for young designers or architects reading this interview?
We are living at such an edge where we require a lot of sensitivity towards our mother nature and of course the inhabitants whom you are catering to, so creativity is not sources driven and doesn’t limit you to venture for excellence.
When Filippo Brunelleschi invented the one-point perspective, it already existed but was never realized. Be that.
‘Design is nothing but a humble understanding of materials, a natural instinct for solutions and respect for nature.’ – BV Doshi
