How did you come up with the name of your studio?
the term” atmosphere” signifies our duty as an architect to create responsible and habitable spaces that give back to the environment and ” design lab ” portrays our willingness to experiment and improvise wherever possible.
What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.
Even in my childhood, I was always into random sketching, doodling, typography, etc..as I grew up that interest made me discover this beautiful career. all of my passions coincide with work in this field that makes me feel great the moment I completed my first residence I knew this was my field because it gave me immense pleasure in seeing the satisfaction with the spaces I designed in the face of my client.
What kind of projects were you doing when you first started as a designer?
in the beginning, I started with designing logos and graphics, from there I was able to bag my first residential project. now we do all kinds of projects and product design as well
What field of design are you most interested in?
I am most interested in the design with adaptive reuse of materials. I was surprised when I discovered the possibilities of the same while experimenting with it in one of my projects
What is your favorite book/magazine on design? How about your favorite site?
my favorite book on design has to be “Beyond Bawa” .it is a book that reflects the work of the great architect Geoffrey Bawa. and the site has to be lunuganga estate in Srilanka
What is your Signature Style?
my signature style is to use materials in their purest form portraying their true characteristics. I try to avoid applying makeup over the materials in all possible areas. efforts are made in all projects for adaptive reuse of materials which is one way of giving back to the environment
What inspires you to thrive in this industry? Which piece of architecture inspires you the most.
the constantly evolving construction technology and new techniques such as 3d printing etc, inspire me as an architect to rediscover the bounds of design every time.
the works of Geoffrey Bawa such as the kandalama hotel inspires me because it blends the lines between the built environment and the building on a next level
From your point of view, is design an art or a science?
the design has to be a holistic blend of art, science, technology, and critical thinking
If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?
I would love to create a sustainable community for the poor and needy where each individual in the community has assigned duties for its sustenance. ideally, this community should be built by recycling all the plastic and non-degradable materials which will also eliminate huge quantities of waste that is harmful. it’s a win-win situation for everyone.
What advice do you have for young designers or architects reading this interview?
to all young architects, never doubt yourself in experimenting with your creativity. all great things are the results of someones willingness to experiment
