Studio Avocado
How did you come up with the name of your studio?
There is an avocado tree near my house. In my childhood, I and my brother used to spend a lot of time under that tree. Many creative ideas were born sitting under that tree and we used to build small houses while playing sitting in its shade.
So one day when I wanted to name my studio, this was the first thing that came into my mind. I wanted it to be catching but not a usual architectural term. Like Steve Jobs named his company “Apple”. And I always believe avocado has rare and unique qualities. Along with that a lot of creative memories are attached to it. Hence the name, studio avocado.
What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.
I always wanted to be in a creative field where I could explore my inner potential. I always found joy in observing things around me. I was intrigued by the perspectives and proportions of both nature and built structures around me. So the very moment I came to know about architecture, I decided to choose it as my path
What kind of projects were you doing when you first started as a designer?
I have started my career by doing small-scale residential projects. Those projects helped in enlightening me and learn from my mistakes.
What field of design are you most interested in?
Working on restoration and renovation project have always been my interest. I enjoy the problem solving and challenges in such projects.
What is your favourite book/magazine on design? How about your favourite site?
The Local Project has been a real inspiration for the design process and the type of works they feature are akin to my works.

What is your Signature Style?
Every project has been evolved from context and is adorned with the play of vertical and horizontal lines. My works embrace modern styles such as Indonesian contemporary architecture comprehending tropical colours and suitable landscaping.
What inspires you to thrive in this industry? Which piece of architecture inspires you the most.
I believe that the responsibility imparted by this profession inspires me the most. Architecture requires high decision-making skills and thus let us contribute our best for our society is something that makes me feel proud about my profession.
From your point of view, is design an art or a science?
Art is what makes a space livable and visually appealing. Without science, it would be impossible to execute the art into existence. Design is both art and science.
If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?
Attempt to revert the earth through green architecture and would work on rectifying misconceptions about architecture.
What advice do you have for young designers or architects reading this interview?
Everyone is unique and has talents. We must contribute our cent per cent. The most important part of designing is the execution as it is the final output. So pay attention and try to work without compromising your ethics.
