Insperior Architect Feature: Turtlehead Studio

Vishnu Raghavan, Paul Augustine & Antony Jose

Firm/Studio Name
TurtleheadStudio

How did you come up with the name of your studio?
So, TurtleheadStudio was founded by a trio. We had decided not to give a name that related to architecture or design, cause we weren’t going to limit our works to just one area. So, the three of us put up one name each on three papers, and one of our mothers picked up one from it. And, that apparently turned out to be TurtleheadStudio.

What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.
We think our internship gave us more clarity on architecture, art, and design. The three of us did our internships at some good design studios in India. So when we met after our internships, we were more curious and confident about designing. During our final semester at college, we were helping our friend with design suggestions on her proposed residence. They weren’t happy with the architect’s design, and that’s when we took a chance. Well, we were just curious and confident, and that’s how we started. We, still are learning though.

What kind of projects were you doing when you first started as a designer?
We initially started with a residence design for our friend. That was a project where we concentrated on each detail, worked out a lot of ideas and experiments. We learned that there was a much more personal connection to residential architecture. And that’s why we decided to design more homes at the start.

What field of design are you most interested in?
Architecture and interior design, the most. We are also interested in furniture design, fashion design, digital art, films.

What is your favorite book/magazine on design? How about your favorite site?
Books by Bedmar & Shi.
Archdaily, Divisare, and Ignant.

What is your Signature Style?
Clean compositions and contrast, right now.

What inspires you to thrive in this industry? Which piece of architecture inspires you the most.
We believe architecture has a great influence on our lives and surroundings. There is an emotional connection from childhood fantasies to different phases of life. There is a process and story of life. We believe we can recreate certain dreams and narrate a story.
We think this huge process, of relationships with people, places, surroundings, their stories keeps us socially connected too.

From your point of view, is design an art or a science?
Design is art and science.

If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?
Urban forests and more homes for all kinds of people.

What advice do you have for young designers or architects reading this interview?
Observe. Trust the process and then the product. Be patient, because there is a huge rush out there. Quality over quantity. And, start practicing only if you are confident.
