How did you come up with the name of your studio?
I wanted my name to be acknowledged for good work. Hence the initials. However, I realize the limitations of a singular identity and wanted to overcome that. We have formed another firm for our product design arm called PTANG. Where our vision encompasses our personal desires.
What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.
As a kid I had a natural observation & appreciation for scale, masses & aesthetics in general. The idea of making something that will last for many years fascinated me. Architecture was but a natural choice.
What kind of projects were you doing when you first started as a designer?
I started with designing interior of offices & residences for friends & relatives. In my 2nd year of practice, I got an opportunity of designing a resort for Tuli Group of Hotels. This changed the course of my practice.
What field of design are you most interested in?
Hospitality & Residential.
What is your favorite book/magazine on design? How about your favorite site?
A book I would recommend all – Why Architecture Matters, by Paul Goldberger.
Websites I often refer to are : Archdaily, Archello, Dezeen, The Architect’s Journal.
What is your Signature Style?
I give priority to two major considerations in a project; site and client. An authentic design solution to the above in my personal unique way could be considered as my signature style.
What inspires you to thrive in this industry? Which piece of artchitecture inspires you the most.
The fact that I have not yet given my best in architecture is what keeps me going. I aspire to make structures that are aligned with environment , utilitarian and alluring.
I am quite drawn to the lifestyle practice in Auroville and their respect for nature which reflects in prevalent architecture of the region.
From your point of view, is design an art or a science?
Design should be marriage of art and science. A masterpiece is created when art is executed with excellence.
If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?
I would create many cities like Auroville across India.
What advice do you have for young designers or architects reading this interview?
Be disciplined. Be real. Be responsible.
